The green film on your siding is most commonly Cladosporium or a related species of green algae. Unlike the black streaks you see on roofs (which are caused by a different organism called Gloeocapsa Magma), the green growth on siding is true algae. It looks like a thin, dusty-green coating that can range from barely noticeable to visibly slimy in wet conditions.
Algae is not a plant and not a fungus. It's a simple photosynthetic organism that needs three things to survive: moisture, some light, and a surface to attach to. Your siding provides two of those things reliably, and Terre Haute's weather provides the third in abundance.

What about DIY methods?
Diluted bleach solutions applied with a garden sprayer and scrubbed with a long-handled brush will kill algae on accessible, ground-level siding. The limitation is coverage: upper floors, peaks, and any area you can't safely reach with a brush won't get treated. Professionals use equipment that reaches any point on a two-story home from the ground, applying consistent coverage without ladders or pressure that could damage the siding.
Store-bought "outdoor cleaner" sprays marketed for algae removal vary widely in effectiveness. Most don't contain enough active biocide to kill established colonies, and the ones that do require scrubbing to work, which is impractical for a full house exterior.
How to Slow It Down Between Cleanings
Annual soft washing is the most effective thing you can do, but a few other factors influence how quickly algae returns between cleanings.
- Trim back tree branches that overhang or touch the house. More sunlight on siding means faster drying and slower algae growth.
- Clean gutters twice a year so they don't overflow and keep the siding base chronically wet.
